Helen wanted to be in Manchester before dinner . She stood at a ticket machine in London and looked at a train for the same day . The price on the screen was more than she wanted to pay for the trip . She did not press buy . An advance ticket , the kind you buy days or weeks before , is often kinder to a purse . She had not bought one . The fast train was about to leave , and she was still on the wrong side of that price . She called her brother Tom , who was already in Manchester . " Take a coach , " he said . " National Express or Megabus . It is slower . You will see fields , not just stations . " Helen wanted the train . She wanted Manchester more . She walked to the coach station and took the next coach that had a seat . The seat was plain . The window was large . The Tube had brought her across London , and she had paid with her bank card , the contactless way , with no paper ticket in her hand . Once the city ended , the land opened . Green fields , low hills , a road that did not hurry . She ate a sandwich from Tesco , with a drink and a small snack in the same bag . She did not sit down in a restaurant . The coach took longer than the train on the machine . She let it . Evening was already in the streets when she stepped down in Manchester . Tom was at the stop . " You missed the fast way , " he said . Helen lifted her bag . " I am here , " she said . They were not going to a big hotel . A hostel had a bed in a shared room , and a kitchen if they wanted to cook later . That was the bed she could pay for and still have money left for the next day . On the walk there , Tom named things people do to spend less . Buy the train early , next time . Walk when a city is good for walking . Cook if the hostel has a kitchen . Helen listened , and she did not turn it into a list to finish tonight . She had wanted a fast arrival and a dinner with her brother . The coach had taken the speed . The brother was on the pavement , and the bed was a few streets away . She shifted the bag to the other shoulder and walked with him .
