Environmental science examines the interactions between physical, chemical, and biological systems that make up the natural environment. It is an interdisciplinary field that draws on ecology, chemistry, physics, geology, biology, and social sciences to understand environmental problems and develop solutions. Sustainability policy translates scientific understanding of environmental systems into policies and practices that allow human societies to meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Together, these fields address one of the greatest challenges of our time: how to achieve human well-being while preserving the ecological systems that sustain life.

Climate change represents perhaps the most pressing environmental challenge of the twenty-first century. The scientific consensus is clear: human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have increased atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, leading to global warming and associated climate changes. These changes include rising sea levels, more frequent and intense extreme weather events, shifts in precipitation patterns, and changes in ecosystems. The impacts are already being felt worldwide, affecting agriculture, water resources, human health, and infrastructure. Addressing climate change requires both mitigation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and adaptation, adjusting to changes that are already occurring.

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, represents the global framework for addressing climate change. Under this agreement, countries committed to limiting global temperature increase to well below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees. Each country submits nationally determined contributions outlining its plans to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. While the Paris Agreement marked significant progress, current commitments are insufficient to meet the temperature targets, and countries must strengthen their actions over time. The agreement also includes provisions for financial assistance to help developing countries transition to low-carbon economies and adapt to climate impacts.

Biodiversity loss is another major environmental crisis. Species are going extinct at rates estimated to be 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural background rates. This loss of biodiversity undermines ecosystem services that humans depend on, including pollination of crops, water purification, climate regulation, and disease control. The causes of biodiversity loss include habitat destruction, overexploitation of species, pollution, invasive species, and climate change. Protecting biodiversity requires conservation of habitats, sustainable management of natural resources, and reduction of drivers of extinction.

Sustainable development seeks to balance economic, social, and environmental objectives. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals provide a framework for achieving sustainable development by 2030. These goals include ending poverty and hunger, ensuring health and education, achieving gender equality, providing clean water and energy, promoting economic growth, reducing inequality, addressing climate change, protecting oceans and terrestrial ecosystems, and strengthening partnerships for development. Achieving these goals requires integrated approaches that recognize the interconnections between different dimensions of sustainability.

Renewable energy plays a crucial role in transitioning to a sustainable future. Solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass energy sources produce little or no greenhouse gas emissions during operation and are generally more sustainable than fossil fuels. The costs of renewable energy have fallen dramatically in recent years, making them increasingly competitive with fossil fuels.
