En una mesa hay dos libros, una hoja de papel y varias monedas. El reto es unir los libros con un puente que sostenga una carga. No hace falta pegamento para la primera prueba.

Coloco la hoja plana sobre los libros. Después pongo una moneda en el centro. El papel se curva con facilidad. No anoto un ganador todavía: esta forma es solo el punto de partida.

Tomo otra hoja del mismo tamaño y la doblo como un acordeón. El material no ha cambiado, pero la forma . Los pliegues crean partes verticales y hacen que la hoja sea más difícil de doblar.

Para comparar los diseños, uso la misma distancia entre los libros y añado monedas de una en una. También coloco las monedas de la misma manera. Así cambio una sola cosa: la forma del papel.

¿Qué ocurre dentro del puente? Cuando una carga empuja una viga hacia abajo, la parte superior queda bajo compresión y la parte inferior queda bajo tensión. La compresión aprieta el material; la tensión lo estira.

Los ingenieros prueban ideas, observan los resultados y cambian el diseño. Un modelo de papel no explica todos los problemas de un puente real, pero permite estudiar cómo una forma cambia la resistencia.
