La instalación tiene una piscina de unos doce metros de profundidad. Bajo el agua hay maquetas a escala real de partes de la Estación Espacial Internacional. La NASA utiliza este lugar para entrenar, desarrollar procedimientos y comprobar equipos.
La sesión no empieza dentro de la piscina. Antes de entrar al agua, el astronauta estudia la secuencia de trabajo, revisa las herramientas y habla con el equipo. Cada movimiento tiene un orden y cada objeto debe estar en el lugar previsto.
Después, el astronauta entra con un traje de entrenamiento. El equipo añade y mueve pesos hasta lograr flotabilidad neutra. Así, la persona no sube ni baja sin control. El agua no elimina la gravedad, pero permite practicar grandes movimientos de una forma útil.
Varios buceadores profesionales acompañan al astronauta. Ellos observan el traje, ayudan con los ajustes y apoyan la seguridad de la sesión. El astronauta también se comunica con instructores fuera del agua.
En la maqueta, la persona practica cómo avanzar con las manos, usar puntos de sujeción y manejar herramientas. También aprende a cuidar el cable de seguridad y a colocar el cuerpo para trabajar sin perder la posición.
Las cámaras y los micrófonos permiten que el equipo siga la práctica. Si una instrucción resulta confusa o una herramienta queda lejos, los especialistas pueden revisar el problema. La piscina sirve entonces para mejorar tanto el trabajo del astronauta como el procedimiento.
Este entrenamiento no convierte el agua en espacio. Es una simulación con límites. Sin embargo, permite repetir una tarea compleja, comparar soluciones y preparar mejor una operación fuera de la nave.
