Los Juegos de la antigua Olimpia y los de Atenas 1896 comparten un nombre, pero no son la misma competición. Entre ambos hay más de mil quinientos años de distancia.

Los primeros registros escritos sitúan unos Juegos en Olimpia en 776 a. C. El festival se celebraba cada cuatro años y formaba parte del culto a Zeus. El último festival de esta serie se celebró en 393.

Después de más de mil quinientos años, un congreso internacional se reunió en la Sorbona de París. El 23 de junio de 1894, el congreso aprobó celebrar unos Juegos internacionales en Atenas en 1896. Del mismo congreso nació el Comité Olímpico Internacional.

La recuperación no fue una copia exacta del festival antiguo. El congreso buscó reglas comunes para el deporte internacional y creó una nueva organización.

Los primeros Juegos modernos se celebraron en Atenas del 6 al 15 de abril de 1896. Participaron 241 hombres de 14 países en nueve deportes y 43 pruebas. No hubo mujeres entre los atletas.

El Estadio Panatenaico fue el centro del encuentro. Había sido construido por primera vez en el siglo IV a. C. y fue renovado para los Juegos.

Los campeones no recibieron medallas de oro, sino una medalla de plata y una rama de olivo. Spyridon Louis ganó el primer maratón olímpico moderno.
