Ángela Ruiz Robles nació en Villamanín, León, en 1895. Se formó como maestra en la Escuela Normal de León y desarrolló gran parte de su carrera en Ferrol, Galicia. Allí enseñó en escuelas y también creó la academia Elmaca, donde acudían personas con pocos recursos para aprender a leer, escribir o preparar oposiciones.

Su trabajo diario en el aula la llevó a pensar en los materiales escolares. Escribió libros de ortografía, taquigrafía y mecanografía, además de mapas sobre la lengua española. No quería limitarse a repetir los métodos conocidos. Quería que el aprendizaje fuera más claro, práctico y atractivo.

En diciembre de 1949 presentó una patente para un libro mecánico, concedida en enero de 1950. El aparato tenía una carcasa parecida a un maletín. Dentro había pequeñas bobinas de papel, y el alumno podía moverlas mediante engranajes para leer distintos textos. Un cristal graduado permitía aumentar el tamaño de las letras.

La idea respondía a dos problemas concretos. Ruiz Robles quería aligerar el peso de las carteras escolares y evitar que cada materia exigiera un volumen diferente. También quería que el contenido pudiera cambiar a medida que el alumno avanzaba. Si una asignatura cambiaba, se podía sustituir una bobina sin reemplazar todo el aparato.

En 1962 registró una propuesta más avanzada, la Enciclopedia mecánica. Los contenidos de las asignaturas aparecían en tiras de papel intercambiables dentro de una misma máquina. El diseño incluía abecedarios mecánicos y espacio para un pequeño dispositivo de sonido. El prototipo se construyó en el Parque de Artillería de Ferrol.

Aunque hoy la comparación resulte tentadora, aquella enciclopedia no era una tableta digital. Funcionaba con papel y piezas mecánicas. Sin embargo, reunía varios contenidos en un solo soporte y permitía cambiar partes sin comprar una obra completa. Por eso muchas personas la relacionan con la historia de los libros electrónicos.

Ruiz Robles presentó sus proyectos en ferias y exposiciones de inventos. Sus propuestas recibieron reconocimientos y despertaron interés institucional, pero no consiguió que su invento se fabricara en serie. Según la Biblioteca Nacional de España, no reunió el capital necesario para una producción masiva.

La inventora murió en Ferrol en 1975. El prototipo de 1962 forma parte de la colección del Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología. Su historia muestra que una innovación educativa puede empezar con una pregunta muy concreta: ¿qué necesita realmente un alumno cuando abre un libro?
