Es mi primer día en Barcelona. Salgo de la estación de tren y veo mucha gente. Hay turistas con cámaras y maletas grandes. El sol brilla y hace buen tiempo.
Busco una oficina de turismo. Necesito un mapa de la ciudad para orientarme. Veo un edificio con una letra i azul en la puerta. Entro y pido un mapa gratuito.
El mapa de papel
La chica en la oficina me da un mapa grande. Lo abro sobre el mostrador. Es colorido y tiene mucha información.
Veo el centro histórico marcado con color rojo. Hay una línea azul que indica el río que atraviesa la ciudad. Los parques están en color verde. Los monumentos importantes tienen fotos pequeñas.
Busco mi hotel en el mapa. Está en la calle Aragón, número cincuenta y dos. Dibuja un círculo alrededor con un bolígrafo. Ahora no puedo perderme.
Entender el mapa
En la esquina inferior izquierda hay una leyenda. Explica qué significa cada símbolo. Una estrella es un monumento histórico. Una letra M es una estación de metro. Una casita indica los servicios turísticos.
Veo una brújula pequeña en la esquina. Me dice que el norte está arriba. Esto me ayuda a entender la dirección de las calles.
Hay una escala en la parte inferior. Dice que un centímetro en el mapa son doscientos metros en la realidad. Puedo calcular distancias a pie.
Usar el mapa
Salgo de la oficina y doblo a la izquierda. Camino dos cuadras y llego a una plaza grande. Compruebo el mapa. Sí, estoy en la plaza Cataluña según mis deducciones.
El mapa me muestra calles pequeñas en el barrio gótico. Quiero visitar la catedral. Sigo las líneas con el dedo y memorizo el camino. Giro a la derecha, luego otra derecha, y sigo recto.
Cada diez minutos saco el mapa para verificar mi ubicación. Busco nombres de calles en las esquinas y los comparo con el mapa. Es fácil orientarse así.
Mapa digital
Por la tarde uso también el mapa en mi teléfono. Es más pequeño pero me dice dónde estoy exactamente. Un puntito azul muestra mi posición actual.
El mapa digital habla. Puedo escuchar las instrucciones. La voz dice: gire a la izquierda en cien metros. Sigue recto durante trescientos metros. Ha llegado a su destino.
Me gusta el mapa de papel para ver la ciudad completa. Me gusta el mapa digital para no perderme. Los dos son útiles para un turista en una ciudad nueva.
