About this article
What you'll learn
Desert words (duna, joroba, oasis, palmera), grasa contrasted with agua, and hay.
Omar walks with his mother among the dunes of the Sahara, in Africa, and wants water. He thinks the camel hump is full of water. His mother gives him a real bottle: the hump stores fat, not water. The camel can also go many days without drinking. Rain is very scarce in this part of the Sahara, and the wind moves the sand, so dunes change shape over time. A lizard crosses the sand. They walk toward an oasis, where there is water and palm trees; from far away it looks like a green island in a sea of sand. The Sahara is very large. Far away, in Chile, in South America, the Atacama Desert is one of the driest deserts in the world. Omar does not want to go there. As the sun goes down the air cools. At night this desert is cold and many stars are visible. They arrive while it is still light. Omar fills the bottle and drinks. He wanted real water, and now he has it.
