About this article
What you'll learn
Present tense, querer, ser and estar, pero, and ice words: hielo, nieve, iceberg, pingüino.
Elena calls her brother Mateo off the ship because she wants him to see a penguin, and the ship is in the bay only today. Antarctica is a continent at the South Pole. Ice covers almost all of it, the ice underneath is thousands of years old, and the continent holds most of the Earth's fresh water. The interior is a white desert with very little snow. There are no trees and almost no plants; on the peninsula, two very small flowering plants grow. They see white and blue icebergs, a penguin that cannot fly, a seal asleep on the ice, and a whale. Many whales come in summer to eat krill. This far south the summer sun does not set, and near the pole in winter it does not rise for many months. Scientists at the base study the ice to understand the climate.
