What you'll learn

Present tense, querer, pero and por eso, ser and estar, and bee words: colmena, néctar, polen, miel.

Nuria wants honey on her bread, but the jar is empty, so she goes with her aunt to the hives at the end of the garden. These are honey bees: small, gold and black, living together. The queen lays tiny white eggs. Nuria thinks the bees carry honey on their legs. Her aunt explains that a worker keeps nectar, the sweet liquid of flowers, inside her body, and carries yellow pollen on her legs. Workers turn nectar into honey and store it in wax combs whose cells have six sides. Pollen can pass to another flower, and many fruit plants need that to make fruit. If a worker stings a person, she leaves the stinger and dies. In hard cold they stay together in the hive and eat stored honey, so the aunt does not take it all. Nuria tastes one spoon.
