Alonso cambia su nombre a Don Quijote. Busca aventuras por toda España. Cabalga su caballo flaco Rocinante. Viaja por campos y pueblos de la Mancha.
Don Quijote tiene un escudero fiel. Se llama Sancho Panza. Sancho es un campesino gordo y realista. Viaja en su burro junto al caballero.
El caballero ve molinos de viento. Piensa que son gigantes malos. Quiere luchar contra ellos. Sancho intenta detenerlo pero Don Quijote ataca los molinos.
La novela es muy divertida. También es triste y profunda. Habla sobre sueños y realidad. Habla sobre locura y cordura. Cervantes crea personajes inolvidables.
Don Quijote cree que una mujer pobre es su dama ideal. La llama Dulcinea del Toboso. Nunca la ve en realidad. Pero él la ama profundamente.
Sancho Panza sueña con ser gobernador. Quiere tener dinero y poder. Al final de la historia viaja a una isla. Allí es gobernador por poco tiempo.
El libro tiene dos partes. La primera parte sale en mil seiscientos cinco. La segunda parte aparece diez años después. Ambas partes son muy populares.
Hoy Don Quijote es un símbolo cultural. Representa el espíritu idealista. También representa la tradición española. Millones de personas leen esta historia universal.
