Sound begins with a vibration. When something vibrates, it moves back and forth quickly. This movement creates waves in the air around it. These waves travel to our ears, where we hear them as sound. For example, when a guitar string vibrates, it creates sound waves that we hear as music.
Our ears are amazing organs that detect sound. The outer ear catches sound waves and directs them into the ear canal. The sound waves then reach the eardrum, which is a thin piece of skin. The eardrum vibrates when sound waves hit it. These vibrations pass through tiny bones in the middle ear to the inner ear.
The inner ear contains the cochlea, which is shaped like a snail shell. Inside the cochlea are thousands of tiny hairs. These hairs convert vibrations into electrical signals. The signals travel through nerves to the brain. Our brain then interprets these signals as the sounds we hear.
Sound has different properties. One important property is pitch. Pitch is how high or low a sound is. High pitch sounds have fast vibrations. Low pitch sounds have slow vibrations. A whistle has a high pitch, while a drum has a low pitch. Women usually have higher pitched voices than men.
Volume is another property of sound. Volume is how loud or soft a sound is. Loud sounds have strong vibrations. Soft sounds have weak vibrations. We measure volume in decibels. Normal conversation is about 60 decibels. A whisper is about 30 decibels. Loud music can be over 100 decibels.
Sound travels at different speeds through different materials. It travels fastest through solids, slower through liquids, and slowest through gases. This is why we can hear a train coming through the railroad tracks before we hear it through the air. Sound travels about 340 meters per second in air at room temperature.
Music is organized sound. People have made music for thousands of years. Music uses rhythm, melody, and harmony to create beautiful sounds. Rhythm is the pattern of beats in music. Melody is the main tune that we remember. Harmony is when different notes play together and sound good.
Musical instruments create sound in different ways. String instruments like guitars and violins use vibrating strings. The length and thickness of the string change the pitch. Wind instruments like flutes and trumpets use vibrating air columns. Percussion instruments like drums use vibrating surfaces.
The piano is a special instrument. It has 88 keys that each play a different note. When we press a key, a small hammer hits a string inside the piano. The string vibrates and creates sound. The piano can play both melody and harmony, making it very versatile.
Different cultures have different musical traditions. Western music often uses scales with 12 notes.
