Gravity is a force that pulls objects toward each other. Earth gravity pulls everything toward the ground. This is why objects fall when you drop them. Gravity keeps us on the ground and prevents us from floating away into space. The Moon has less gravity than Earth, so astronauts can jump higher on the Moon.
Friction is a force that opposes motion. It happens when two surfaces rub against each other. Friction makes it harder to slide things on rough surfaces. For example, it is easier to slide on ice than on concrete because ice has less friction. Friction can be useful when you want to stop or slow down, like brakes on a bicycle.
Motion is when an object changes its position. Objects can move in different ways. They can move in a straight line, in a circle, or back and forth. Speed is how fast something moves. Velocity is speed in a specific direction. When you drive a car, you have both speed and direction.
Simple machines help us do work with less force. There are six types of simple machines. A lever is like a seesaw that helps lift heavy things. A wheel and axle make it easier to move things. A pulley helps lift heavy objects up. An inclined plane is a ramp that makes it easier to move things up. A wedge splits things apart. A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder.
Newton laws explain how forces and motion work. The first law says that objects stay still or keep moving unless a force acts on them. This is called inertia. The second law says that force equals mass times acceleration. Heavier things need more force to move. The third law says that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Balanced forces are equal forces that act in opposite directions. When forces are balanced, an object does not move. For example, if you push a box from both sides with the same force, the box stays still. Unbalanced forces cause objects to accelerate or change direction. When you push a box harder from one side, it starts moving.
Air resistance is a type of friction that happens when objects move through air. Fast-moving objects like cars experience air resistance. This is why cars are designed to be aerodynamic to reduce air resistance. Parachutes use air resistance to slow down falling objects. Without air resistance, objects would fall much faster.
Magnetic force is a force that acts on magnetic materials. Magnets have two poles called north and south. Like poles repel each other, and opposite poles attract. Magnetic forces are used in many things like compasses, electric motors, and refrigerator magnets.
