Climate change refers to significant changes in global temperatures and weather patterns over time. While climate change can occur naturally, scientists agree that human activities have been the main driver since the 1800s. The burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This carbon dioxide acts like a blanket that traps heat around the Earth, causing temperatures to rise.

Global warming is the long-term increase in Earth average temperature due to climate change. Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have released enormous quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases include carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels, methane from agriculture and waste, and nitrous oxide from industrial processes. The concentration of these gases has reached levels not seen in millions of years.

The effects of climate change are already visible around the world. Polar ice caps are melting, causing sea levels to rise. This threatens coastal cities and small island nations with flooding. Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves have become more frequent and intense. These changes affect agriculture, water supplies, and human health. Many plant and animal species are struggling to adapt to the rapidly changing conditions.

Rising temperatures are affecting ecosystems in various ways. Coral reefs are dying due to warmer ocean waters and ocean acidification. Forests are experiencing more frequent and severe wildfires. Some species are migrating to cooler areas, while others cannot move fast enough and face extinction. These changes disrupt food chains and biodiversity, which can have cascading effects throughout entire ecosystems.

Human activities that contribute to climate change include transportation, industry, agriculture, and energy production. Cars, planes, and ships burn fossil fuels, releasing carbon dioxide. Factories and power plants generate electricity and goods while emitting greenhouse gases. Agriculture, especially livestock farming, produces methane. Deforestation reduces the number of trees that can absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The impact of climate change on human society is profound. Agriculture faces challenges from changing weather patterns, which can lead to food shortages. Water scarcity becomes more severe in some regions due to prolonged droughts. Health risks increase as heatwaves become more common and diseases spread to new areas. Economic costs rise from damage caused by extreme weather events and the need to adapt to changing conditions.

Climate change does not affect all regions equally. Some areas will experience more severe impacts than others. Developing countries often lack the resources to adapt to climate change, despite contributing less to the problem historically. Arctic regions are warming faster than the rest of the world, affecting indigenous communities and wildlife. Small island nations face existential threats from rising sea levels.

Solutions to climate change require action on multiple fronts. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential. This means transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. Improving energy efficiency in buildings, transportation, and industry can significantly reduce emissions. Protecting and restoring forests helps absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
