Etiquette refers to the rules of polite behavior in society. Every culture has its own etiquette and customs. Understanding these rules helps people interact respectfully with others. When you visit a different country, it is important to learn about local customs.

Greetings vary between cultures. In some countries, people shake hands when they meet. In others, they bow or kiss on the cheek. In Japan, bowing is the traditional greeting. The depth of the bow shows respect. In France, people often kiss on both cheeks as a greeting.

Dining etiquette is different around the world. In some Asian countries, slurping noodles shows that you enjoy the food. In Western countries, this is considered rude. Using chopsticks correctly is important in many Asian cultures. There are specific rules about how to hold and use them.

In many Middle Eastern and South Asian countries, people eat with their right hand. The left hand is considered unclean. In India, it is polite to eat with your fingers from a banana leaf or plate. Sharing food from the same dish is common in many cultures.

Gift-giving customs vary significantly. In China, you should not give clocks as gifts because clocks symbolize death. In some cultures, giving knives is bad luck because it cuts the relationship. The way you present a gift also matters. Using both hands shows respect in many Asian countries.

Personal space is different in each culture. In some Latin American and Mediterranean countries, people stand very close when talking. In Northern European countries, people prefer more distance. Touching during conversation is acceptable in some places but not in others.

Time perception varies culturally. In some countries, being on time is very important. In Germany and Switzerland, punctuality is expected. In other cultures, being a little late is normal and acceptable. This is called "elastic time."

Removing shoes before entering a home is customary in many Asian and Middle Eastern countries. In Japan, it is essential to take off shoes at the door. In Scandinavian countries, this is also common. In other places, people keep their shoes on inside.

Eye contact has different meanings. In Western cultures, eye contact shows confidence and honesty. In some Asian and African cultures, avoiding eye contact is a sign of respect, especially with elders or authority figures.

Tipping customs vary widely. In the United States, tipping is expected in restaurants and for services. In Japan, tipping is not customary and can even be considered rude. In some European countries, a service charge is included in the bill.

Queuing behavior differs between cultures. In Britain, people form orderly lines and wait their turn. In some other countries, pushing to the front is more common. Respecting the queue is important in many places.

Public displays of affection have different rules. In some conservative cultures, holding hands or kissing in public is not acceptable. In more liberal societies, this is normal behavior. It is important to observe what local people do.

Using titles and names correctly shows respect.
