In the United States, tipping is a very important part of the culture. In restaurants, it is common to leave a tip of 15% to 20% of the total bill. This is because many workers in the service industry receive a very low salary. They depend on tips to make enough money to live. If the service is excellent, some people leave even more. Even in coffee shops, there is often a "tip jar" on the counter for small amounts of change.
The rules in Europe are quite different. In many European countries, like France or Germany, the tip is often included in the bill. This is usually called a "service charge." You do not have to leave extra money, but many people still leave a few small coins if they are happy with the service. In the United Kingdom, it is common to leave about 10% in restaurants, but you should check the bill first for a service charge.
In some countries, tipping can actually be rude. For example, in Japan and South Korea, good service is expected and is part of the job. Giving extra money might make the worker feel uncomfortable or even insulted. If you leave money on the table in a Japanese restaurant, the waiter might run after you to return it, thinking you forgot your change! It is always better to say "thank you" politely instead of giving money in these places.
Taxis are another common place for tipping. In many countries, people do not give a specific percentage. Instead, they "round up" the fare. For example, if the taxi ride costs nine euros and fifty cents, you might give the driver ten euros and tell them to "keep the change." This is a quick and easy way to show that you appreciate the ride. In some cities, taxi apps allow you to add a tip through your phone.
When you stay at a hotel, there are several people you might want to tip. The "porter" who carries your bags to your room usually receives a small amount per bag. You might also leave a small tip for the person who cleans your room. It is a nice gesture to leave a few coins or a small note on the desk at the end of your stay. This shows that you noticed their hard work in keeping the room clean and comfortable.
Why do tipping cultures vary so much? It usually depends on the laws and the economy of the country. In countries where workers have high salaries and good benefits, tipping is less important.
