Last Wednesday rain fell all afternoon , so my sister Clara and I walked to the public library on King Street at two o'clock . We usually play outside after school , but wet weather pushed us indoors , and the library felt warm and quiet near the reading desks . Clara loves picture books about animals , and she ran to the children's corner because new titles arrived on Monday . I chose a novel about travel , and I sat beside her because parents asked me to stay close in busy rooms . Do you read at the library on rainy days ? Our neighbour Ben does not visit often , but he likes history magazines near the front desk on Tuesdays . He waved to us when we entered , and he recommended a short article about old bridges because Clara asked about rivers . At half past two a librarian read a story to a small group , and Clara listened with her fingers on the page because she likes following words with her eyes . I recorded the title on my phone , and I promised to borrow the book next week when our card limit allowed another loan . Clara does not like walking home in heavy rain , but she likes watching drops on the window from a safe seat inside . I told her we would wait until four , and I bought her a small juice at the cafe because the machine near the exit accepts coins . At three we searched the shelves together , and Clara found a book about cats that sleep in sunny gardens . She showed me pictures , and I read captions to her because some words were new for her age . She thanked me quietly , and she hugged the book before we walked to the desk . Does Clara enjoy library cards ? She does not remember her number yet , but she likes stamping dates on slips when staff help us at the counter . I write her name on forms , and I return books on time because late fees feel unnecessary for careful readers . Before leaving at four fifteen we sat in the hall , and Clara drew a cat on scrap paper from my notebook . I praised her lines , and I suggested colours because art and reading fit well on grey afternoons . She smiled , and she asked if we could return on Friday after school . We walked home under shared umbrellas , and Clara told Dad about the story hour because he loves hearing her summaries at dinner . Rain continued until evening , but the library gave us a calm place to learn , imagine , and spend time together without screens or hurry .
