In January 1969 , The Beatles had not played a live concert in nearly three years . What the band needed was a dramatic conclusion to their documentary film , * Let It Be * . Rarely does a group of such magnitude decide to perform unannounced , but the four musicians agreed to play on the roof of their Apple Corps headquarters in central London . They ought to have secured a performance permit from the local authorities , but secure one they did not . Instead , on a freezing Thursday lunchtime , they simply plugged their amplifiers into the building's power supply . The biting wind meant John Lennon performed in his wife's fur coat , while Ringo Starr wore a red raincoat belonging to his own wife , Maureen . Not until the first chords of " Get Back " echoed across the street did the public realise what was happening . Office workers in neighbouring buildings opened their windows and climbed onto fire escapes . Some pedestrians thought the music was a promotional stunt ; others assumed it was a recorded broadcast . The Metropolitan Police soon received noise complaints from nearby businesses . A local manager demanded that the disruption be stopped immediately . The responding officers might have arrested the band members for disturbing the peace , yet they hesitated when they saw the cameras and realised who was playing . Little did the officers know that their intervention would provide the perfect ending for the film . They eventually reached the roof and instructed the road managers to turn down the amplifiers . The musicians could have argued , but they chose not to . The forty - two - minute set ended with a famously understated remark from Lennon . He thanked the crowd on behalf of the group and added that he hoped they had passed the audition . Never again would the four of them perform live together . The rooftop footage became the iconic climax of the documentary . The police intervention provided exactly the dramatic tension the director had been seeking . What began as a logistical compromise ended up symbolising the end of the 1960s pop era . If you had been walking through London that afternoon , would you have stopped to listen ? What unannounced outdoor performances have you witnessed in your own city , and how did the crowd react ?
