In the early days of the internet , architects designed IPv4 to provide roughly 4 . 3 billion unique IP addresses . At the time , that number seemed inexhaustible . Few dared to imagine a future where every phone , television , and household appliance would require a permanent connection to the global network . By the late 1990s , however , engineers realised the pool of available addresses was rapidly draining . What the infrastructure desperately needed was a vastly expanded numbering system . This impending exhaustion led to the development of Internet Protocol version 6 , or IPv6 . Unlike its predecessor , IPv6 uses 128 - bit addresses , allowing for an astronomically larger number of devices . Under this new protocol , the theoretical limit is 340 undecillion addresses . Not only does this solve the immediate shortage , but it also provides enough space for decades of future technological expansion . Migration , unfortunately , has not been as rapid as early advocates hoped . Some large telecom operators upgraded their core networks years ago , while many smaller regional providers still haven't . For the global internet to function efficiently , every piece of routing hardware ought to support the new standard natively . Maintaining two parallel routing systems adds significant overhead for internet service providers . They must run dual - stack configurations , processing both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic simultaneously . If they could drop the older protocol entirely , they would gladly do so , but legacy systems prevent it . Security is another area where the modern protocol brings fundamental changes . IPsec , a suite of protocols for encrypting and authenticating data packets , was built into the foundation of IPv6 from the beginning . It was this integrated security architecture that convinced many enterprise networks to begin their transitions . Despite the slow adoption , the shift is ultimately inevitable . The central registries have already allocated their final blocks of IPv4 addresses . Are you aware of which protocol your home router currently uses ? Do you think the transition will ever be truly complete ?
