What stayed with me after the curtain fell was not the final speech , nor the sudden blackout that followed it , but the silence before the actors returned to bow . That silence contained the entire production . The play , a new staging of The Glass Harbour at the Lyric Theatre , is ostensibly about a family disputing an inheritance . Its plot is familiar enough : an ageing father dies , three adult children return to the coastal house where they grew up , and old grievances surface as they decide what to sell , what to keep , and what to forgive . Yet what the director , Mara Venn , has made is not really a drama about property . What she has made is a drama about attention — about who is noticed , who is ignored , and who learns to control a room simply by refusing to speak . That distinction matters , and the grammar of emphasis helps to express it . A neutral sentence might say : " The production succeeds because it trusts silence . " A wh - cleft , or pseudo - cleft , reorganises the same information : " What makes the production succeed is its trust in silence . " The wh - clause — " what makes the production succeed " — creates an expectation . The focused element arrives later : " its trust in silence . " The structure delays the answer and gives it weight . Venn's production repeatedly earns that kind of emphasis . What first appears to be a realistic family drama gradually becomes something stranger . The actors speak in ordinary rhythms , but the staging keeps undermining the apparent naturalism . Doors remain open after characters leave . A dining table is slowly moved farther upstage between scenes . Lamps are switched on in empty rooms . These details are never explained . What they create is a sense that the house is watching the family rather than merely containing it . The most impressive performance comes from Lena Ortiz as Mara , the eldest daughter . Ortiz does not dominate the stage by volume . What she does instead is redirect attention . During an argument in the second act , two characters shout across the kitchen while Mara sits at the table sorting old receipts . She says nothing for nearly a minute . What the audience watches , however , is her . A conventional review could write , " Ortiz's stillness is effective . " That is accurate but weak . The pseudo - cleft makes the evaluative point more precise : " What gives Ortiz's stillness its force is the noise around it . " The structure separates the question from the answer . First comes the category to be explained — the source of the stillness's force — and then the focused phrase . This is one reason wh - clefts are useful in criticism . Reviews constantly rank causes , effects , strengths , and weaknesses . A pseudo - cleft can make that hierarchy explicit . What weakens the production is not its slowness but its occasional distrust of that slowness . The problem becomes visible late in the second act . Until then , Venn lets gestures accumulate without explanation . A chair left empty , a coat folded twice , a glass moved from one end of the table to the other : each detail acquires meaning through repetition . Then the script suddenly gives Mara a long speech explaining what those details have represented .
