Sam wanted to finish one sentence before his sister left the flat . The sentence lived in a document he had started on his office computer . That computer was still at work , and he was already home . If he waited until morning , she would take the old line to her teacher , and the poster for the school fair would be wrong . He opened the laptop in the kitchen and looked in the downloads folder . The document was not there . The desktop was empty too . For a moment he thought the only copy was on the office machine . Then he remembered . The file was a Google Doc . It was stored online , so it did not sit on only one computer . He opened the browser . The sign - in page asked for his password . He typed it , and the same title was there . The last line was still empty . A comment from his colleague sat in the margin : " Add the place of the fair here . " He had shared the document with her that morning , which was why she could write on it . He had not sent the file by email . He typed " the school hall " and read the line aloud . His sister was packing a bag by the door . She nodded . Those were the words she wanted on the poster . An older file sat in the same list , with " gym " in the name . That copy still sent people to the gym . The new document sent them to the hall . Sam left the old file closed . If he had copied it onto a USB stick at lunch , the gym line might have been the one in his pocket . He stayed with the document they had both opened . His sister raised her phone to photograph the screen . Sam asked her to wait . A photo stays the same even when the document changes . He copied the link and sent it to her phone . She would need an internet connection to open it , on the bus or at school . If the teacher asked for one more word , the change could go into that same Google Doc , not into a picture trapped on the kitchen table . The door closed behind her . The office computer was still at work , and it did not matter . The sentence was in the document , his colleague could already see it , and his sister had the link .
