Omar wanted to send money to his sister Leila . She lived in another country . The last time he sent money through a friend , the friend said it had arrived , and Leila said it had not . Omar wanted a record that both of them could see , and that neither of them could quietly change . He did not want a bank keeping the only copy . He sent her some Bitcoin . Bitcoin is a digital currency people can send to each other , and its network started in 2009 . Bitcoin keeps payments on a blockchain . A blockchain is a shared list . The list is cut into blocks , and each new block is linked to the one before it . Many computers around the world keep a copy . When Omar's payment was accepted , it went into a new block . Leila opened the same list on her phone . The line was there . On his own phone Omar could edit a private note . On this list he could not make the other copies agree with a change . Once a block is accepted , one person cannot quietly replace it . He asked a friend how the link holds . Each block carries a code called a hash . The code is built from what is inside the block , so it works like a fingerprint . The next block stores the fingerprint of the block before it . If someone changes an old payment , that block's fingerprint changes too . Then it no longer matches the code saved in the next block . The other computers see the break and reject the change . The chain is that line of fingerprints , each one pointing back . The payment still had to be confirmed before it joined the list . People called miners run computers that compete to add the next block . When a miner's computer wins that round , the miner can receive new Bitcoin for the work . Omar did not meet a miner . Leila did not meet one either . They only watched the line appear for both of them . Leila wrote that she could see it . Omar looked at the line again . It sat in a block that pointed back to the block before it . He put the phone down . The payment was no longer a sentence one friend could remember differently from the other . It was a line on a list they both held , and neither of them could erase it alone .
