I . The Darlings and Nana All children , except one , grow up . Wendy Darling learned this when she was two . One day she picked a flower in the garden and ran with it to her mother . Mrs Darling put her hand on her heart and cried , “ Oh , why can’t you stay like this for ever ! ” From that day Wendy knew that she had to grow up . The Darlings lived at number 14 in a quiet London street . Mrs Darling was a lovely lady , and in the right corner of her mouth there was always a little kiss . Nobody could ever get that kiss , not even Wendy . Mr Darling worked in an office and worried a lot about money . First Wendy came , then John , then Michael . The family was not rich , so their nurse was a big dog called Nana . She was the best nurse in London . She gave the children their baths , walked them to school and woke at once if one of them cried in the night . Her kennel stood in the nursery . Every night , when the children were asleep , Mrs Darling tidied their minds , as good mothers do . In their minds she often found the Neverland , an island with lagoons , pirates , caves and wild animals . One night she found a word there that she did not know . The word was Peter . “ He is Peter Pan , you know , Mother , ” said Wendy . Mrs Darling remembered stories from her own childhood about a Peter Pan who lived with the fairies . “ But he would be grown up by now , ” she said . “ Oh no , he isn’t grown up , ” said Wendy . “ He is just my size . ” One morning Mrs Darling found some strange leaves on the nursery floor , near the window . “ I think it is that Peter again ! ” said Wendy . “ He comes in by the window at night and plays his pipes at the end of my bed . ” “ But , my love , the nursery is three floors up , ” said Mrs Darling . Still , she could not explain the leaves . The very next night Mrs Darling fell asleep by the nursery fire . Suddenly the window blew open , and a boy dropped onto the floor . He was dressed in leaves , and he still had all his first teeth . A little light , no bigger than a fist , flew round the room with him . Mrs Darling woke with a cry , and at once she knew that he was Peter Pan . Then Nana came in and jumped at him . The boy leapt out of the window , and Nana shut it quickly . She was too late to catch him , but his shadow did not get out in time . The window closed on it , and it came off . Mrs Darling rolled the shadow up and put it in a drawer . A week later came a Friday that the family never forgot . Mr and Mrs Darling were going out to dinner at number 27 , a few houses away . Michael did not want to take his medicine . “ Be a man , Michael , ” said his father . “ When I was your age , I took my medicine without a word . ”
