I . Jonathan’s Diary : The Journey My name is Jonathan Harker . I am a young lawyer from Exeter , in the south - west of England , and I work for a kind old lawyer called Mr Hawkins . One spring , Mr Hawkins sent me on a long journey to the east of Europe . A rich nobleman , Count Dracula , wanted to buy a house near London , and I had to take him the papers . The house was called Carfax . It was a big , lonely old place with high stone walls , and it stood near the river at Purfleet , east of the city . Before I left , I said goodbye to Mina . Mina Murray was my fiancée , the girl I was going to marry . She was a teacher , clever and brave , and I promised to write to her often . I decided to keep a diary of my journey for her too . I wrote most of it in shorthand , a quick way of writing with short signs instead of letters . Mina knew shorthand well , but few other people did . I travelled by train for many days . After Vienna and Budapest the country became wilder and more beautiful . I saw green hills , dark forests , old castles and little villages with white churches . The trains were slow and often late . On the third of May , in the evening , I arrived in the town of Bistritz . The Count lived in a part of the world called Transylvania , high in the Carpathian Mountains . From Bistritz I had to take a coach to the Borgo Pass , a road through the mountains . The Count’s carriage was going to meet me there . At the Golden Krone Hotel there was a letter from the Count . “ My friend , welcome to the Carpathians , ” he wrote . “ I am waiting for you . Sleep well tonight . Tomorrow the coach will take you to the Borgo Pass , and my carriage will bring you to me . ” The landlady and her husband looked afraid when I asked them about the Count . They made the sign of the cross and said that they knew nothing . In the morning , before I left , the old woman came up to my room . She was very nervous . “ Must you go ? ” she asked . “ Oh , young sir , must you go ? ” “ Yes , I must , ” I said . “ It’s business . ” “ Do you know what day it is ? ” “ It’s the fourth of May . ” “ Yes . And tonight , at midnight , all the evil things in the world will have power . Do you know where you are going , and what you are going to ? ” She fell on her knees and begged me to wait for one or two days . I lifted her up and told her kindly that I had to go . Then she took a small silver cross on a chain from her own neck and held it out to me . “ For your mother’s sake , ” she said , and she put it round my neck . In my church at home we do not wear such things , and I thought it was a little silly . But I did not want to hurt the old woman , so I kept it on .
