I . Against My Father’s Advice I was born in the year 1632 in the city of York , in the north of England . My father came from Bremen in Germany . He made good money as a merchant and then settled in York , where he married my mother . Her family was called Robinson . Our German family name was Kreutznaer , but English people could not say it well . So they called us Crusoe , and that is how I became Robinson Crusoe . I was the third son . My eldest brother was a soldier , and he died in a battle in Flanders . We never learned what happened to my second brother . My father wanted me to study law . But I only wanted one thing : I wanted to go to sea . One morning my father called me to his room . He was old and ill , and he spoke to me very seriously . “ Why do you want to leave your home and your country ? ” he asked . “ You can have a good , quiet life here . Poor men must work too hard , and rich men worry too much . But a man in the middle has a calm and happy life . I have seen it . Stay at home , my son . If you go to sea , God will not bless you . One day you will be sorry , and there will be nobody to help you . ” Tears ran down his face when he spoke about my brother who died in the war . I was deeply moved , and I promised myself to stay at home . But after a few days I forgot my promise . About a year later I was in Hull , a port on the east coast . There I met a friend whose father had a ship . It was sailing to London the next day . “ Come with us , ” said my friend . “ It won’t cost you anything . ” I did not ask my father or my mother . I did not even send them a message . On the first of September 1651 I went on board the ship . It was an unlucky day for me , though I did not know it then . As soon as we left the river , the wind began to blow and the sea rose . I had never been at sea before , and I was terribly sick and afraid . Every wave seemed ready to swallow us . I remembered my father’s words , and I made a promise to God . “ If I ever put my foot on dry land again , ” I said , “ I will go straight home to my father . ” The next day the wind dropped and the sea was calm . The sun shone on the water , and it was very beautiful . In the evening my friend laughed at me . “ Were you frightened by that little wind ? ” he said . “ That was nothing . Come and have a drink , and forget it . ” We drank a lot of punch that night , and I forgot all my promises .
