I . Part One : The Shipwreck My name is Lemuel Gulliver . My father had a small farm in Nottinghamshire , and I was the third of his five sons . I went to Cambridge , and then I studied medicine in London and Holland . For some years I was a ship’s doctor . In London I married Mary Burton , and we had children . But my work on land did not go well , and the sea called me again . On the 4th of May 1699 I sailed from Bristol on a ship called the Antelope . A terrible storm drove us north - west of Van Diemen’s Land . On the 5th of November the air was full of mist . Suddenly a sailor saw a rock very close to us . The wind was too strong , and the ship hit the rock and broke apart . Six of us got into the small boat and rowed until we had no more strength . Then a sudden wind turned our boat over . I never saw my friends again . I swam and swam , and the waves pushed me forward . When I was almost dead , my feet touched sand at last . I walked through the shallow water to the shore . I saw no houses and no people . I was terribly tired , so I lay down on the short , soft grass . I slept for about nine hours . When I woke up , it was daylight . I tried to get up , but I could not move . My arms and legs were tied to the ground . My long hair was tied down too , and thin strings went across my whole body . I could only look up at the sky . Then I felt something alive on my left leg . It walked slowly up over my chest and stopped near my chin . It was a human being , less than six inches tall ! He had a bow and arrow in his hands . Behind him came about forty more little men . I gave a great shout , and they all ran back in fear . Some of them fell off my body and hurt themselves . But soon they came back . One of them looked at my face and cried in a high voice , “ Hekinah degul ! ” I did not know what it meant . I pulled hard and broke the strings on my left arm . At once a hundred arrows hit my hand . They felt like needles . More arrows fell on my face . Some men tried to push spears into my sides , but luckily I was wearing a thick leather jacket . So I decided to lie still until night . When I stopped moving , they stopped shooting . After a while a great lord climbed onto a little stage near my head . He made a long speech to me , but I did not understand a word . I was very hungry , so I put my finger to my mouth again and again . The lord understood me . A hundred people climbed ladders onto my body with baskets of meat and bread . The legs of meat were smaller than the wings of a lark . I ate them two or three at a time . Then I made a sign for a drink . They rolled up their biggest barrel of wine . I drank it in one mouthful , because it held less than half a pint .
