I . There Is No One Left When Mary Lennox came to Misselthwaite Manor to live with her uncle , everybody said that she was the most unpleasant - looking child they had ever seen . She had a thin little face , thin light hair and a sour look . Her skin was yellow because she was born in India and was always ill in one way or another . Her father worked for the English government there , and he was always busy . Her mother was a great beauty who only cared about parties . She never wanted a little girl . When Mary was born , she gave her to an ayah , an Indian nanny , and said , “ Keep the child out of my sight . ” The ayah and the other servants always gave Mary what she wanted , because her mother did not like to hear her cry . So by the age of six Mary was as selfish and bossy as a child can be . An English teacher came to teach her to read and write , but she disliked Mary so much that she left after three months . One very hot morning , when Mary was about nine , she woke up and saw a strange woman by her bed . “ Why did you come ? ” Mary said . “ Send my ayah to me . ” The woman looked frightened and said that the ayah could not come . Mary flew into a temper and hit her , but the woman only repeated the same words . Something strange was happening that morning . Some of the servants were missing , and the others hurried about with pale faces . Nobody told Mary anything , so she went out into the garden alone . She sat under a tree and pushed big red flowers into little heaps of earth . She was pretending to make a flower bed . Then her mother came out onto the veranda with a young officer . She was tall and pretty , and she always wore lovely clothes full of lace . But this morning her large eyes were full of fear . “ Is it very bad ? ” Mary heard her ask . “ Terribly bad , Mrs Lennox , ” the young man answered . “ You should have gone to the hills two weeks ago . ” “ Oh , I know ! ” she cried . “ I only stayed for that silly dinner party . ” At that moment loud crying came from the servants ’ houses , and they both ran inside . A dangerous illness called cholera had come to the town . Mary’s ayah became ill in the night , and she died before morning . By the next day three more servants were dead , and others ran away in fear . On the second day Mary hid in her nursery , and everybody forgot about her . Once she crept into the empty dining room and ate some fruit and biscuits from the table . She drank a glass of sweet wine too , because she was thirsty . It made her very sleepy , and she went back to bed and slept for a long time . When she woke up , the house was perfectly silent . A little snake was moving across the floor . It looked at her with eyes like jewels and slipped under the door .
