I . The Witches on the Heath Long ago , some Scottish lords were fighting against their good old king , Duncan , and the King of Norway had sent an army to help them . Far from the fighting , three strange women met on an empty heath in the thunder and rain . A heath is wild , open land where only rough grass and low plants grow . The women were old and thin , and they wore wild , dirty clothes . They were witches . “ When will we three meet again ? ” asked the first witch . “ When the noise of the battle is over , ” said the second . “ When one side has lost and the other side has won . ” “ Before the sun goes down , ” said the third . “ Here on the heath , where we will meet Macbeth . ” Then the three of them spoke together , like a song . “ Fair is foul , and foul is fair , ” they said , and they flew away through the fog and the dirty air . These words were a kind of riddle . Fair means good and beautiful , and foul means bad and ugly . For the witches , good was bad and bad was good . In this story , very little was what it seemed . In the king’s camp , King Duncan was waiting for news with his two sons , Malcolm and Donalbain . Soon a wounded soldier came in . “ For a long time nobody knew who would win , ” said the soldier . “ The rebels were strong , and their leader was a cruel man called Macdonwald . But brave Macbeth didn’t care about danger . He cut his way through the enemy with his sword until he stood face to face with Macdonwald , and he killed him . Then the King of Norway attacked us with fresh soldiers . But Macbeth and Banquo , our two captains , fought twice as hard as before . ” “ Oh , brave cousin ! ” said the king . Macbeth was the king’s cousin and one of his great lords . Next came Ross , another Scottish lord . The Norwegians were beaten , he said , and their king was asking for peace . But the Thane of Cawdor had secretly helped the enemy . A thane was a Scottish lord who ruled a piece of land for the king . Macbeth was the Thane of Glamis , and the Thane of Cawdor was one of the king’s most trusted men . The king was angry and sad . “ The Thane of Cawdor will never betray us again , ” he said . “ He must die . Go and tell Macbeth that he is the Thane of Cawdor now . ” Meanwhile the witches were waiting on the heath . The first witch was angry with a sailor’s wife who refused to share her nuts , so she was planning to send storms after the woman’s husband and his ship . Then they heard a drum . “ A drum , a drum ! ” cried the third witch . “ Macbeth is coming ! ” Macbeth and his friend Banquo came riding across the heath . They were tired after the battle , and the weather was terrible . “ I have never seen a day so foul and so fair , ” said Macbeth . The rain was foul , but the victory was fair .
