Now everything in Heidi’s heart burst out . “ I only want to go home ! Snowflake will be crying , and Granny is waiting for me . And here I can never see the sun say good night to the mountains ! ” “ The child has gone mad ! ” cried Miss Rottenmeier . A few days later Miss Rottenmeier found the rolls in the wardrobe . “ Tinette , throw it all away , and that old straw hat too ! ” Heidi cried as if her heart would break . “ They’re for Granny ! ” “ Don’t cry , Heidi , ” said Clara . “ When you go home , I’ll give you just as many rolls , fresh ones . ” That night Heidi found her old straw hat under her blanket . Sebastian had saved it for her . Soon Mr Sesemann came home . Miss Rottenmeier told him that the child was not right in the head . But Clara told him about the kittens and the tortoise , and he laughed . “ Shall I send her home , Clara ? ” “ Oh no , Papa ! Since Heidi came , something happens every day . ” “ Then the child stays , ” Mr Sesemann told Miss Rottenmeier . “ And everyone must be kind to her . My mother is coming soon , and she can manage anybody . ” VIII . Grandmamma Then Clara’s grandmother came to stay . She had lovely white hair and a lace cap with two long ribbons . Heidi liked her at once . “ Here everyone calls me Grandmamma , ” she said . “ Can you remember that ? ” “ Oh yes , ” said Heidi . “ And what is your name ? ” “ Heidi . ” “ Adelheid is a better name , ” began Miss Rottenmeier . “ If a child is called Heidi , then I call her Heidi , and that’s that ! ” said Grandmamma . One afternoon Grandmamma showed Heidi some big books with lovely pictures . Suddenly Heidi burst into tears . A picture showed a shepherd in a green meadow at sunset , among his sheep and goats . “ Don’t cry , child , ” said Grandmamma . “ There’s a lovely story about this picture . When you can read , the book will be yours . ” “ But reading is too hard . Peter said so . ” “ You believed Peter . Now believe me . You’ll soon learn . ” Heidi had a secret . Ever since the day Miss Rottenmeier called her ungrateful , she knew that she could not go home when she wanted . And she must never say that she wanted to , because everyone was so kind . So she kept her sadness inside . She could not eat , and she grew paler every day . At night she dreamt of the Alm , and in the morning she cried quietly into her pillow . Grandmamma noticed . “ What’s wrong , Heidi ? ” “ I can’t tell anyone . ” “ Then tell God in heaven . When we have a sadness that we can’t tell anyone , we can always tell him . He can help when nobody else can . ” Heidi ran to her room , put her hands together and told God everything . She asked him to let her go home to her grandfather . A week later the tutor came to Grandmamma with amazing news . Heidi had learnt to read , almost overnight ! That evening Heidi found the big picture book on her plate . “ For ever ? Even when I go home ? ” “ For ever . ”
