He even had a plan . He could sell everything and buy wild land in the West with the money . He already saw Katrina and their children on top of a wagon full of pots and pans . He himself was riding beside them on the way to Kentucky , or Heaven knows where . When he went inside the house , his heart was lost completely . Rows of shining plates stood on a long shelf . In the best room the dark tables shone like mirrors . From that moment Ichabod had only one aim . He had to win Katrina’s heart . IV . Brom Bones This was not easy . In the old stories , a knight only has to fight giants and dragons . Then the lady gives him her hand . But Ichabod had to win a country girl who changed her mind every day . And he had real enemies of flesh and blood : all the young men who admired Katrina . The most dangerous of them was Abraham Van Brunt , or Brom for short . He was the hero of the whole country round . He had broad shoulders , curly black hair and a rough but pleasant face . He looked full of fun , and a little proud . Because he was so big and strong , people called him Brom Bones . He was the best rider in the country and won every race . Brom was always ready for a fight or for fun . But there was more mischief than evil in him , and at heart he was good - natured . He had a gang of three or four friends . In cold weather he wore a fur hat with a fox’s tail on top . When people saw that tail coming , they knew that trouble was coming too . Sometimes the gang rode past the farms at midnight , shouting and whooping . The old women woke up in their beds . “ There goes Brom Bones and his gang ! ” they said . Brom was in love with Katrina too . His way of courting was rather like the gentle play of a bear . But people whispered that she did not completely discourage him . On Sunday nights his horse stood tied to Van Tassel’s fence . Everyone knew what that meant . The other young men passed by sadly and looked for girls somewhere else . This was Ichabod’s rival . A stronger man would run away , and a wiser man would give up . But Ichabod was like a thin young tree in the wind . He bent easily , but he never broke . To fight Brom openly was madness . So Ichabod moved quietly and gently . As singing master , he had a good reason to visit the farm often . The parents were no problem . Baltus loved his daughter even more than his pipe . He let her do whatever she wanted . His busy little wife had her house and her birds to look after . As she wisely said , ducks and geese need watching , but girls can look after themselves . So Ichabod was free to court the daughter by the spring under the great elm .
