I do not know how women’s hearts are won . To me they have always been a mystery . But one thing is certain . From the moment Ichabod began his visits , Brom’s horse no longer stood at the fence on Sunday nights . And slowly a bitter war began between Brom and the schoolmaster . Brom wanted to settle the matter like the knights of old , in a fight . He even said that he was going to fold the schoolmaster up and put him on a shelf . Ichabod heard about this , and he was far too careful to fight . His peaceful ways annoyed Brom terribly . So Brom played rough jokes on him instead . His gang blocked the school chimney and filled the singing class with smoke . One night they broke into the school and turned everything upside down . The poor schoolmaster began to think that all the witches of the country met there . Even worse , Brom laughed at him in front of Katrina . He taught his dog to howl in a very silly way . Then he brought it to Katrina as Ichabod’s rival , to give her singing lessons . V . An Invitation Things went on like this for some time . Then , one fine autumn afternoon , Ichabod was sitting on his high stool in the schoolroom . From there he watched over his little kingdom . The birch stick hung on three nails behind him . On his desk lay the half - eaten apples and toy guns of lazy boys . All the pupils were reading hard , with one eye on the master . Suddenly a messenger arrived at the school door . He was riding a wild young horse with a rope instead of reins . He brought an invitation for Ichabod to a party that evening at Mr Van Tassel’s . He gave his message in fine , important words . Then he jumped the stream and galloped away up the valley . At once the quiet schoolroom was full of noise . The master hurried the children through their lessons . Books flew aside , ink pots fell over and benches crashed to the floor . School ended an hour early , and the children rushed out , shouting with joy . Ichabod spent an extra half hour on his appearance . He brushed his best suit , which was also his only suit . He arranged his hair in a piece of broken mirror . He wanted to arrive like a real knight , so he borrowed a horse . It belonged to Hans Van Ripper , a bad - tempered old farmer . Ichabod was living at his farm that week . Now I must describe my hero and his horse . The animal was an old plough horse . It had lived longer than almost everything except its bad temper . It was thin and rough , with a head like a hammer . One eye was blind , but the other shone like the devil’s . The horse was called Gunpowder , so perhaps it was full of fire once . Old as it was , it had more devil in it than any young horse . Ichabod looked just right on such a horse . His stirrups were short , so his knees came up nearly to the top of the saddle . His sharp elbows stuck out like a grasshopper’s legs . As the horse trotted along , his arms went up and down like a pair of wings . You rarely see a sight like that in broad daylight .
