It was a beautiful autumn day , and the woods were brown , yellow and red . Ichabod rode slowly and looked around him with delight . His eye was always open for food . Everywhere he saw apples , on the trees and in great piles for cider . He saw fields of corn , which promised cakes and puddings . Under the corn lay fat yellow pumpkins , turning their round bellies to the sun . They promised delicious pies . He passed fields of buckwheat and dreamed of pancakes with butter and honey . Of course , Katrina Van Tassel’s pretty little hands were going to make them . With these sweet thoughts he rode along the hills above the Hudson . The wide river lay as still as glass . A boat was drifting on the water with its sail hanging loose . It looked as if it was floating in the air . VI . The Party It was evening when Ichabod arrived at the farm . The house was full of people from the country round . There were old farmers with thin brown faces , their lively little wives , and their sons and daughters in their best clothes . But the hero of the party was Brom Bones . He came on his favourite horse , Daredevil . Like its master , it was full of mischief , and nobody else could ride it . I would like to describe all the charms that met my hero in the big room . I do not mean the charms of the pretty girls . I mean the charms of a Dutch country tea table in autumn ! There were piles of cakes of every kind : doughnuts , ginger cakes and honey cakes . There were apple pies , peach pies and pumpkin pies . There was ham and smoked beef , fish and roast chicken , and bowls of milk and cream . In the middle of it all stood the big teapot , sending up clouds of steam . But I have no time to describe this feast . I am in a hurry to get on with my story . Luckily , Ichabod was not in a hurry . He tasted every dish . He was a kind and grateful creature . His heart grew bigger when his stomach was full . As he ate , he rolled his large eyes around the room and laughed quietly to himself . Perhaps one day he was going to be the master of all this ! Then he could say goodbye to the old schoolhouse . He could snap his fingers at Hans Van Ripper and every other mean farmer . Old Baltus Van Tassel moved among his guests . His face was round and happy , like the full moon at harvest time . He did not say much . He shook hands , gave everyone a friendly slap on the shoulder and laughed loudly . “ Eat up , now ! ” he said . “ Help yourselves ! ” Then music began in the hall , and everybody went to dance . The musician was an old grey - haired fiddler . He played at every party in the neighbourhood . His fiddle was as old and battered as he was . For every new couple he bowed almost to the ground and stamped his foot .
