Marta wants one thing on her first evening in Edinburgh . She wants a person to walk with her to Arthur's Seat in the morning . People walk up the hill , but she does not want to go alone . The shared kitchen downstairs is the only place with light and voices . She puts water in a pot for pasta . The water is still cold . At the other end of the table , a young man is cutting a large loaf of bread . He looks at the pot , then at her face . " Is that dinner for one ? " he asks . " Yes , " Marta says . " This is my first night here . I do not know anyone in the city . " " I am Tom . I arrived yesterday on the bus from London . I bought too much bread . Do you want some ? " Marta wants the bread , and she wants the conversation more . She takes a piece . It is still soft . " Thank you . Tomorrow I want to walk to Arthur's Seat . Do you know the way from here ? " Tom nods . " I went up yesterday . You can start near the palace , in Holyrood Park . The path goes up through grass and rock . From the top you can see the city and the water , if the day is clear . I can go with you . " This is the hello she came downstairs for . They sit at the long table and eat . Tom talks about the bus . Marta talks about her train . The stories are short . What matters is that two strangers now have names , and a plan . A woman in a red coat comes in and fills the kettle . She hears " Arthur's Seat " and stops . " I am Aisha . I am going in the morning too . The wind up there can be strong , so take a coat . The front door , after breakfast ? " She sets three mugs on the table . The kettle in this kitchen is for everyone , and nobody says no . They agree on the door and leave the rest open . A short time ago they were three strangers . Now they have a plan for the morning . Marta washes her bowl . She is no longer waiting for a first hello . It already happened over bread and a pot of cold water . In the morning she will meet Tom and Aisha at the front door , and she will not start the walk alone .
