Eli wanted one picture of his father before the light went . They were on the harbor wall , and his father was already turning toward the cafe , tired of standing still . The sun was low . The stones looked warm instead of white . His mother had asked for one photo of his father by the water , not another picture of boats with nobody in them . Eli had plenty of those . He did not have this one . If he waited until they were back at the table , the wall would be gray , and the moment would be only a story . His first try was bad , and he could see it on the screen . His father was a small dark shape in the middle , and the boats and the wet rope sat nowhere useful . Eli took two more from the same spot , as if repeating the mistake would fix it . It did not . His father shifted his weight and looked at the cafe door . A woman mending a net nearby watched him and shook her head , not unkindly . She pointed at his father , then at the edge of the frame , and moved her hand closer to her own face . Eli understood enough . He stepped in until the coat filled more of the picture , and he set his father to one side so the boats had room . He asked his father to look at the water , not at the lens . His father sighed and did it . The photo on the screen was simple . A coat , the wall , the boats , and a face that looked like his father , not like a man posing . Eli felt he could stop . He had wanted that picture all afternoon . He had it . His father was already walking . Eli lifted the camera again , because the light on the ropes was even warmer , and then he lowered it . The woman was watching the boats , not him . His father called his name once . Eli put the camera in his bag and went to the wall . For a minute he looked at the same water with nothing between his eye and it . The picture was in the camera . This part did not need one .
