Nadia wanted the afternoon for Lisbon , not for a laptop in a dark room . Her team sat several time zones behind her , and the only hour they could all speak was her morning . If she missed it , the day would turn into messages , and the river would stay a picture on her phone . The cafe from yesterday could not carry this call . The connection had dropped twice , in the middle of a sentence she could not repeat . She had learned the plain rule of working far from an office : the job travels only as far as the internet does . So she took a desk in a coworking space , the kind of room many cities keep for people who arrive with a job rather than a holiday . She was there before the street was busy . The call itself was ordinary . A draft , a question , a decision that could have waited and did not . When it ended , she closed the laptop . That was the line she had promised herself : work in the morning , the city after . People who skip that line can change countries and never quite arrive . On the way out she passed a notice about visas for people who work online . Portugal is one of the countries with a visa for remote workers , separate from a tourist stamp . She did not stop for the small print . A friend had already taught her the other caution , the hard way : a health policy bought at home had not covered a clinic abroad . The paperwork was real . It was not this afternoon . She walked down toward the Tagus with the laptop shut in her bag . A tram bell rang on the street above her , and she let it go . The river was wide and ordinary , and the rest of the day was hers . That was the trip she had wanted . Not a speech about freedom , and not a longer list of cities : one finished call , and Lisbon still in front of her .
