Paul wanted one rapid . Not the whole river , and not a photograph of Queenstown from the hill . He wanted the stretch of the Shotover that the guide had described the night before , the one that would let him phone his brother and say he had been through it . In that same talk the guide had made them say , out loud , what kind of swimmer they were . Paul said he could swim , and he meant a pool . He did not mean water the color of the river after rain . He still went to bed wanting the rapid more than he wanted to be careful . Rain changed the plan before breakfast . The river was higher , browner , and louder than the picture in the office . The guide did not give a speech about adventure . He walked Paul to a bend in the track , pointed at the water , and said the hard section was off . A morning that looks manageable can turn , he said , when the river rises faster than the timetable . They would not be on it . Paul had already done the dull half . He had asked who would be in the boat and how the kit was maintained , and he had bought the extra cover the desk described , because his ordinary travel policy did not cover the raft . The helmet was in his hands . None of that lowered the river . The guide was watching the water , not the booking . They stayed on the track above the gorge . The guide kept the group off the loose edge , where boots start the small slides that later become a path . Leave the bank as you found it , he said , even on a day when you are furious . Paul was furious for about ten minutes . Then he watched a whole tree turn in the current and go under . He understood the cancellation with his eyes . He phoned his brother from the van and told him the truth . The rapid was still there , and he had not run it . His brother laughed , then stopped . Paul looked back at the gorge . The day had not given him the story he came for . It had given him the guide's no , and on dry ground he was glad the no had won .
