Omar stood at the front desk with a short list in his hand . Ms Patel had written it that morning : answer the phone , greet visitors , and keep the desk tidy . He read it twice . It felt complete . Then Mr Berg came through the door with a heavy bag and a wet coat . " I have a meeting upstairs , " he said . " The elevator is not moving . Can you walk me up ? I do not know this building . " Omar looked at the list . Walking a guest was not on it . The phone was . If he left , a call could come in and nobody would answer . If he stayed , Mr Berg would look for the room alone . Omar wanted the paper to choose , and it did not . He kept one hand near the phone and called across the quiet office . " Ms Patel , can you come to the desk ? " She came over . Mr Berg waited by the elevator , watching the dark doors . Omar spoke so both of them could hear . " He needs the stairs , " Omar said . " My list does not say I can leave the phone . I do not want to be rude , and I do not want a caller to reach an empty desk . " Ms Patel read the short list again . Then she took his pen and wrote a new line under it : When a guest asks , walk them to the room if the elevator is down . Tell the caller you will call back . " I kept it short so your first day would feel easy , " she said . " That made this moment harder . Lost guests belong to this desk . Go with him . I will stay by the phone . " Omar nodded . He turned to Mr Berg . " I can take the bag , if you want . The stairs are just past the elevator . " Mr Berg let him take it . They climbed without talking much . At the meeting room door , Mr Berg set the bag down . " I thought I was going to get lost in a hallway , " he said . " Thank you for coming with me . " Omar went back down . The new line was still there , in dark ink , and Ms Patel was beside the phone . A woman had just come in . She looked at the elevator doors , which still did not open , and then she looked at Omar . " Are you the person who walks people up ? " she asked . Omar touched the paper once . " Yes , " he said . " Give me a moment with the phone , and then I will take you . "
