Greta put a sheet of stickers on the counter and turned her phone so Hana could see the post . The post said the new formula was in the shop today . It was not . The courier had called from across town , and the box on the counter was the old run , the same jars they had been selling all month . Hana wanted the shelf to tell the truth . A woman had come yesterday , touched a jar , and said she would return when the new one arrived . Hana had told her to come back . " The person with the camera will be here after lunch , " Greta said . " If the shelf looks empty , the post looks like a lie . Put the stickers on . We can swap the jars when the real box comes . " Hana held one jar . The sticker in her other hand said " new formula " in bright letters . It would cover the old label completely . For a second she wanted the full shelf , and Greta's face going soft . Then she thought of the woman from yesterday trusting a sentence that had already left her mouth . She did not press the sticker down . She peeled the corner she had touched , so it would not stick by accident , and she dropped it in the bin . " I am not putting these on , " she said . Greta's mouth went small . " Then hide the old ones . Leave the shelf thin , and I will say the rest are in the back . " " She will ask me to bring one out , " Hana said . " What do I put in her hand ? " Greta looked at the phone , then at the box , and said nothing . Hana packed the old jars into the box they had come out of . Greta did not help . She held the sticker sheet and watched the shelf go bare . Hana left only the jars whose labels were still true , the old name facing the door . The bell over the door rang . It was not the camera . It was the woman from yesterday . She smiled as if the shop had kept a promise . " Do you have the new one ? " she asked . Hana felt Greta behind her . The easy sentence was right there . She did not use it . " Not yet , " Hana said . " These are the old ones . The new box is still on the way . " The woman looked at the thin shelf . She thanked Hana and did not buy anything . The bell rang again when she left . Greta set the phone face down , harder than she needed to . Hana picked up the sticker sheet and carried it to the back room , where a hand at the counter could not reach it .
