Lena stood on the wet sidewalk with a cloth in one hand and a marker in the other . The bakery behind her was warm . The glass in front of her was clean , and it was also useless . A bus stopped across the street . People got off and walked toward the station . Almost nobody turned to look at her shop . She wanted one of them to come in . Not everyone on the bus . One person who lived on another street and did not already buy the same loaf every Friday . The words on the glass said Fresh Bread Daily . They were true , and any bakery on this road could say the same thing . Lena had copied the line from a notebook beside the counter . None of the plans in that notebook could be read from a bus seat . The window was the only sentence a stranger had time to finish before the doors closed . Mr Adeyemi came out of the hardware shop next door with a small box under his arm . He stopped , read the glass , and shook his head . " It tells them you sell bread , " he said . " They can see the bread . Give them a reason to cross before the bus leaves . " Inside , the regular customers were already waiting . Lena knew their names and their orders . The bus pulled away . The people from it did not look back . She wiped the old line off the glass . For a moment the window showed only the loaves and her own face . She almost wrote about coffee and the Saturday market , then stopped . A person on the bus would not read a list . She wrote one line , low enough to see from the road : The olive loaf is still warm if you come now . Mr Adeyemi read it . " Now I have to choose , " he said , and he went back to his shop . Lena waited for the next bus . A woman in a gray coat got off , read the window , and looked at her phone . She crossed the road . At the door she asked , " Is the olive loaf still warm , or did you write that only to make me stop ? " " It's still warm , " Lena said . " I wrote it because it's true this morning . " The woman paid and carried the loaf back to the stop . She did not say she would come again . Lena put the cap on the marker . Tomorrow she would wash the glass before the first bus and read the line out loud . If the loaf was no longer warm , the words would have to come off .
