Hannah wanted the reply up before the comment found more company . Under the photo of the new window , someone had written that a novel from the shop had come home with blank pages where a chapter should have been . The words were polite . Polite , under a picture that was already collecting replies , was how a small complaint turned into the story people told about the place . The window in the photo was the one she had stayed late to dress . A missing chapter , said in public under that glass , would sit on the shop longer than any one book . That was why her thumbs were already moving . She had the answer half written . Sorry you got that copy . Bring it back and we will put another in your hand . She wanted it settled before lunch , the way she thought a careful shop answered : seen , kind , finished . The owner was out . If Hannah posted and the pages were fine , she would be the one who had made the shop say otherwise . If she waited and the pages really were blank , the customer would think nobody was minding the place . Both fears were already loud , which was why the draft felt like relief . Victor , who unpacked the boxes , read it across her shoulder . " Have you held the book ? " " It is in their house . " " Then we do not know , " he said . " If you put that under the photo , the shop has said we sold a broken copy . We might have . We have not seen it . After this , people meet your sentence . They do not meet the book . " She looked at the word sorry . A minute ago it had been manners . Now it was a claim she could not stand behind , not yet . Silence still frightened her . A comment left alone looked like she did not care , and she did . She also knew a note to one person was not the same thing as a line the street could quote on the way past the glass . " I will write to them , " she said . " Not under the photo . " She deleted the public draft . The message she sent asked them to bring the novel in , so someone at the counter could look at the pages with them . The comment stayed up . Her reply did not .
