Ade wanted the pen off the page . Lewis had the supplier's sustainability certificate open in a signing folder . The paragraph about a closed loop sat there as if print were proof . Ade had walked that floor . The loop was a sentence . Scraps the paragraph sent back into the work were bagged for a truck . A young man on the line , helpful until the question got specific , had said the wording came from a template they had been handed , and had then found something urgent to do with his hands . The client wanted a certificate in the file . Lewis wanted the file more than he wanted an argument . Ade set two fingers on the folder , lightly , only to keep it from being signed while he spoke . " Don't sign that , " he said . " The paragraph is borrowed . I asked where the scraps go back in . They don't . They leave . " Lewis did not perform surprise . That was almost worse . " They all read like this . If we kick it back , we lose the slot , and the client hears that we are being difficult . " " If you sign it , the difficult part is ours , " Ade said . " We would be filing a template as a condition we checked . Send it back with one question , in your handwriting : where do the scraps go back into the line ? I stood in the place that sentence points to . It was a loading door and a stack of bags . " Lewis turned the sheet as if the other side might be less smooth . " And if they have no answer ? " " Then we do not have the supplier this page describes , " Ade said . " We have a logo on a PDF . Let that be their problem to explain , not ours to adopt . " He looked , for a second , like a man about to write a softer line , the kind that says the work is on the way , which would have been the same claim with the corners sanded off . He did not . He took the pen and put the question in the margin , the letters pressed hard enough to show on the reverse , and pushed the page across . " Scan it like this , " he said . " I don't want a clean version going out under my name . " Ade picked up the page .
