Helen Ward wanted one sentence out of the building before the last train left the city . The hub was closed , the departure board was a wall of red , and the duty director was still protecting the word delay . She stood at the glass above the concourse with both drafts in her hand . Behind her the operations floor had gone quiet while everyone waited for permission . A gate supervisor had already called . Families were on the carpet . A man with small children had asked , in a voice that carried , whether delay meant he should keep them awake . Helen had heard that question on other nights . A soft word kept people in the room , because a delay still sounds like a door that might open . Martin Hale , the duty director , wanted another look from legal . The soft draft promised updates and thanked passengers for their patience . It did not say the airport would stay shut until morning . It did not say that rooms were being found for people already airside , or that anyone still landside should leave if they had somewhere to go . Helen wanted his name on the plain version . He wanted time the terminal did not have . She read the soft draft aloud , then the plain one , and she did not decorate either . The plain one was short . The airport is closed until morning . If you are already through security , wait where you are and a colleague will come to you about a room . If you are still landside , go home if you can . We will write again when we know which flights can move . Martin listened with his arms folded . He said legal would hate the word closed , because closed was a fact they might have to stand behind . Helen said delay was already untrue , and that an untrue word would keep people in a building that had nothing left to give them . He did not ask for a third version . He took her pen , struck out delay , and wrote closed in the same hand he used for the weather log . He signed under it . He told her to send it to the boards , the gates , and the public feed , and to stop bargaining with anyone who wanted a kinder verb . Helen sent it . She did not stay to watch the replies . She went back to the desk and opened the list of hotels that still had rooms , because those rooms were now her job . The first voice she heard was the gate supervisor , saying that people were standing up and folding their coats . She nodded , and she kept her eyes on the list .
