Maya Ellison wanted the staff note stopped while it still said that nothing would change . Owen Briggs , the founder , had written it after the advisers came in . He wanted it out before the workshop heard a rumour from a supplier . They stood in the small room beside the floor , the door not quite shut . Outside , a machine was still running . Owen kept glancing toward the sound as if it proved his line . Maya did not look with him . Owen's draft was on his phone . It thanked people for their patience , said the company was talking to advisers as a precaution , and ended on the line he liked : everyone here is safe . Maya had watched that kind of line travel . People repeated it . She did not believe he could stand behind it once a restructuring had begun . A supplier had already written . The message asked whether the next delivery should come , and whether the last invoice would be paid in the ordinary way . Owen had not answered . He said the staff note was a separate kindness , and that the supplier could wait until he had a cleaner answer . Maya wanted the kindness taken out . She did not want a lecture in its place . She wanted him to tell the floor that a restructuring had started , that he could not promise jobs , and that he would speak to them in person in the morning . Anything softer would reach the supplier as if it were a fact . Owen resisted . He said fear would empty the workshop faster than the truth . Maya turned his phone so the supplier's question sat under the draft , and she asked him to read both . He did . The comfort line answered the supplier without meaning to . If nothing was changing , the delivery should come . If everyone was safe , the invoice was an ordinary invoice . He had not decided either thing . Saying them on the floor would send them out of the building by the afternoon . He deleted the last line . He did not ask Maya for a gentler ending . He typed , slowly , that a restructuring had started , that he would not pretend to know who stayed , and that he would be on the floor in the morning to say it aloud . Maya read it once and nodded . He put the phone in his pocket and opened the workshop door .
