Lena wanted the tomato plant in the ground before the roots dried . The pot had cracked on the way home , and a thin line of soil was already on the step . She could see pale roots at the break . The plant was leaning , and the leaves looked duller than in the shop . The near bed was the easy place , right by the water tap . She knelt and pushed her fingers into it . The top was dust . Under that , the soil was packed and hard , and her nail bent against it . A hole there would be a scrape , not a place for roots . If she forced the plant in , those roots would fold . Still , the tap was right there . Water would be easy . From the back fence she would have to carry every drop as well as the soil , and her arms were already tired from the walk . At the back of the garden a low pile of dark soil sat by the fence . It was the soft pile she had been saving . It was farther away , and she would have to carry it . The plant could not sit in the sun on the step for long . The roots were already in the air . Lena almost set the plant into the hard bed anyway . Her knee was down . The small spade was in her hand . Then she thought of the roots bent under the stem , and of the plant sitting high and drying out . She stood up . She left the spade , cupped the pot against her chest so the crack faced up , and walked to the pile . The dark soil gave under her fingers . She scooped it into an old bucket and carried the bucket back , the pot held in the same arm so the crack stayed shut . At the near bed she did not dig the hard ground . She poured the dark soil into a mound , opened a place with her hand , and set the plant in so the roots could hang straight . She pressed the soil gently . The leaves were still dull . The stem stood up . She poured a little water at the base and kept it off the leaves . The cracked pot was empty on the step , with a pale line of dry soil along the break . Lena left it there and went inside to wash her hands .
