Jonah wanted the heavy blanket on the bed before evening . The light quilt had been enough , and last night it was not . He woke with his feet cold and the quilt balled at his knees . He did not want that again . He stood on a chair and reached to the top of the cupboard . The heavy blanket was there , folded inside a cloth bag . The bag was dusty along the seam . He pulled it down against his chest and stepped off the chair before he looked inside . The blanket smelled of the closed cupboard , dry and a little sweet . Wool scratched his wrist as he shook it over the bed . He had forgotten that scratch . The light quilt was smooth and asked for nothing . This one needed both arms . It was thicker than he remembered , and it hung down on both sides . The room was warm while he worked . The sun sat on the curtain . He could hear a radio through the wall , faint , and no wind at the glass . He started to roll the light quilt . If it went into the bag , the change was finished . The bag was open on the floor , waiting . He held the rolled quilt over that bag and did not drop it . Evening was not in the room yet . The sun on the curtain could leave soon , or the night could stay mild and he would be too hot under the thick blanket . He had been wrong about the quilt last night . He could be wrong about the blanket tonight . A thin draft came under the door and found his ankles . Jonah let out a breath . He spread the heavy blanket and smoothed it with his palms , up to the pillow and down to the foot . Then he folded the light quilt once , not small , and set it on the chair beside the bed . The bag stayed empty . He did not stand on the chair again . He pushed the empty bag onto the cupboard as far as his hands could reach , and a corner of it still showed . He closed the window he had opened earlier . The room went still .
