Nora worked nights in a small bakery . She wanted one thing before sleep . She wanted to walk her son , Theo , to the corner while the morning was still new . On other days she came home too late and found only his cup in the sink . So on this night she kept looking at the sky . The street outside was dark . Inside , the ovens were hot and the lights stayed on . Nora shaped bread while the city slept . A car passed . Then another . Then the street went quiet . Quiet meant the night was still long , and Theo's morning was still far away . She knew the night by small signs . The radio played songs with nobody talking . The other baker stopped singing . Flour sat on her sleeves . Her feet hurt , and she moved her weight from one foot to the other . Before work , the owner told her she could leave when the last bread came out and the sky grew light . She wanted to be at the door when Theo put his coat on . The sky did grow light . Nora washed her hands . A little flour stayed in the lines of her skin . She stepped into cold , clean air and walked fast . Shops were opening . A bus waited at the corner with its lights on . The sun was not high , but the night was gone . She hoped Theo was still at home . He was . His school bag was already on his shoulder , and his hand was on the door . Toast crumbs sat on the table . When he saw her , he stopped . " Mum ? You are here . " Nora smiled . She said she wanted to walk with him to the corner . He looked at the door , then at her , and he nodded . They went down the stairs together . The air outside was cold and fresh . Theo talked about a picture he was making at school , a house with a huge sun . Nora listened . She did not hurry him , and she did not hold him back . At the corner a friend was waiting . Theo kissed her cheek . The kiss was quick , and it tasted a little of jam . " See you later , " he said , and he went on into the day . Nora stood there until he looked small in the light . Then she walked back to the flat . Morning light filled the rooms . She closed the curtains , and the room felt a little more like night . Children shouted in the street . A truck beeped while it backed up . She lay down in her clothes . Her body wanted sleep . The walk was short . It was the morning she wanted .
