Mara kept her pen above the page and did not sign . The room had gone quiet in the way rooms do when a small sentence is about to become public . On the screen , the draft ended with a clean promise : the crew would land on Mars . She wanted that line gone . She had not come in to stop the mission . She still took the night bus because she believed the work mattered . She wanted the public sentence to say only what this team could stand behind . " Land is the wrong verb , " she said . Dean , who wrote the updates , looked tired rather than angry . " People need a picture . If we say we are still working on the landing , they hear that we have no plan . " " Then let them hear what the plan really is , " Mara said . " We have a plan for the flight , and a hard problem at the end of it . Mars has a thin atmosphere . A parachute that would slow a heavy craft in Earth's air does not do the same job there . We can aim this craft . We can fly it . We should not tell the public that the crew will come down safely , because that last part is still the work on this table . " On the table between them lay a printed sketch of the craft , the parachute drawn small above the heavy craft . Mara had circled that drawing in the morning and written nothing else beside it . She did not need a longer speech . She needed the last line of the update to match the circle . Dean rubbed his thumb along the edge of his notebook . " So what do I write ? That we might come down too hard ? " " Write that the journey and the landing are different problems , " she said . " Write that the air on Mars will not slow us the way Earth's air would . Write that we are still testing how to come down . If you need one sentence , use mine . We know how to leave . We are still learning how to arrive . " He deleted the last line , typed hers , and read it aloud . Mara signed beside it and capped her pen . The date stayed blank . Outside , the lights had come on .
