Maya's father is still in his chair , and the band keeps playing fast songs . This is her sister's wedding . The hall is loud , the cake is gone , and some guests are already looking for their coats . Before the wedding her father said , " Save one dance for me . A slow one . " Maya said yes . She has not danced with him yet . His knee hurts . He can stand , and he can walk , but he cannot move like the cousins on the floor . A fast song is too much for him . Maya watches the singer start another quick song , and she knows there is not much time left . She walks to the stage . Her hands are cold . The singer drinks water and looks at her . " Can you play one slow song ? " she asks . " My father wants to dance . He cannot dance to the fast songs . " The singer looks across the hall at the man in the chair . He speaks to the drummer , then turns back to Maya . " We have one song left , " he says . " It is slow . Is that enough ? " " Yes , " Maya says . " Thank you . " She does not ask the name of the song . She goes back to the chair and holds out her hand . " Come with me , " she says . " They will play a slow song now . " Her father stands . He is careful with the bad knee . They find a small open space by the wall , away from the cousins . The song begins . It is slow enough . Maya puts one hand on his shoulder . He smells like the soap from their kitchen at home . His steps are small , and she takes the same small steps . In the middle of the song he laughs , because he almost steps on her shoe . " Sorry , " he says . " I do not dance very often now . " " You are fine , " she says . " Stay with me . " He nods . His hand is warm . He does not try to go faster . Maya watches his face . He is counting the steps in a soft voice , almost to himself . " One , two . One , two . " She counts with him , so he does not have to do it alone . People beside them move back a little and give them room . Maya's sister stands by the cake table . She sees them , and she does not call them over for a photo . She lets them finish the dance . When the song ends , the hall gets loud again . Her father squeezes her hand once . He sits down and breathes out slowly . He has his dance .
