Mina got to the market while the shutters were still down , because the sign on her table was wrong and the doors would open soon . Ben , who sold bread at the next table , had written it for her the night before . He had wanted to help . The card said " exotic sour plums " in thick marker , with her own name for them squeezed underneath in smaller letters . She wanted the card to say what her mother called them . She did not want a joke , and she did not want people to blush at the word . " You're early , " Ben said . He was stacking loaves . " I can redo it . I thought people would be curious . " " Curious is fine , " Mina said . She held up the card . " This word is not . It makes them sound like a trick . " He looked at it and winced . " Tell me the name again . " She said it . He tried , and he lost the middle of the word . She said it slower . He tried again , closer , still not right . A woman unlocking the flower stall glanced over , then looked away , and Ben tried again . " Write what I say , " Mina said . " Then you read it back . If you only copy the letters , you will hide behind the card when someone asks . " He wrote . She changed a letter . He read it , and she shook her head , and he read it again until she let it stand . " What do they taste like , then ? " he asked . " People will ask me when you're with a customer . " " Sour first . Then sweet . My mother eats them with rice , not as a sweet . If you say candy , you will sell the wrong thing . " Ben turned the card over and wrote a short line under the name : sour , then sweet , eaten with rice . He did not add a story . Mina watched his hand and stopped him when he reached for the word he had used before . " Leave that out . " " I was going to say it quietly . " " Then don't say it at all . " They taped the card to the front of her table . The shutters were coming up . The first customer was a man who often bought bread from Ben and never asked about Mina's jars . He pointed at the card . " How do you say that ? " Ben said the name . He stumbled and stopped . Mina said it after him , the same word , with nothing added . The man repeated it and asked for a jar . Ben put the cap on the marker and went back to his loaves .
