Elena heard the parent group before she heard Jonah . The phone on the kitchen table kept lighting up with the same short clip : a police car on their street , a voice she could not catch , and a caption that called the road unsafe . Jonah had been ready for his grandmother . One shoe was on , the other was in his hand , and then the clip was playing again . " We should stay here , " he said . " Everyone is saying it . The clip was still running under his thumb , with no sound . Elena kept her hand on the door and said nothing else . She had asked her question . If she asked it again , she would be arguing with a comment thread , and a comment thread does not get tired . He locked the screen and put the second shoe on . " If it looks wrong at the corner , we come back . " " Yes . " They stepped out . Behind them the parent group was still writing the street . In front of them , it was only the street .
